Back in the Day: Interview with 410 BC

410 BC is an independent, design-driven brand offering high quality, sweatshop free clothing and goods released in limited quantities. Based out of New York, 410 BC is both a clothing company and an artist collective. Collaborating with a variety of artists, 410 BC stands as a collective of likeminded individuals who strive to create unique designs, while producing goods through ethical means. More than a clothing company, 410 BC is a lifestyle brand combining art, fashion, music, and conscious consumerism. By working with a variety of artists, 410 BC is able to showcase and promote talented individuals of our generation and give back to the community. By blurring the lines between fashion and art, 410 BC is able to produce genuinely unique clothing.410 BC is the date that Democracy was restored in Athens. The Athenians were at war and their victory in 410 BC enabled them to restore their traditional institutions. They had a choice and they chose the route less taken, maybe the choice was a little bumpier, but overall, the end result was a lot better than any alternative. At its core, this is what 410 BC as a company truly represents, a choice.

WTW
: What is the inspiration behind the line?

410BC: To offer a wide variety of high quality, sweatshop free clothing. Also, to work with different artists to produce diverse designs.

WTW: If you could collaborate with another line, who would it be?

410BC: Diesel or Betsey Johnson

WTW: Imagine living during 410 BC. How would you survive?

410BC: It’d be pretty awesome. Ancient Greece would be a lot of fun, just hanging out at the Acropolis all day long, riding in a chariot, haha.

WTW: What music/artists do you listen to while working?

410BC: Rachel – Recently, a lot of Bloc Party and Band of Horses

Nicole – Stars, Santogold, The Pipettes

WTW: I have worn two of your tees and they are very comfortable. What materials do you use?

410BC: Our tees are 100 percent organic cotton, which makes them more comfortable as well as environmentally friendly.

WTW: Do you see the brand becoming more mainstream this year? Or are you satisfied with its current status?

410BC: We’re definitely satisfied with where we are right now. There has been a lot of growth though, which is great because it means reaching more people and getting to do new things; such as donating more money to organizations, working on new products and meeting new artists. We’re hoping that 410 BC continues to grow and expand.

WTW: Growing up, were you always interested in fashion? Did you imagine you would start t-shirt line?

410BC: We’ve always been interested in fashion as a form of self-expression, but never thought we’d start our own line. When we first started up, just making designs and screen printing shirts, it was just something we did for fun. We never expected a business to grow out of it.

WTW: Any last words?

410BC: Thanks for the interview! Be sure to check out our new line, it’s dropping next week!
